SIMPLE MACHINES

PULLEYS

A pulley is a simple machine that uses a wheel and a rope, string, or belt to move things. A pulley can help us lift objects, change the direction of a pull, or transfer motion from one place to another.

HOW PULLEYS WORK

When a rope moves around a pulley, the pulley turns. Pulling on one side of the rope can make an object on the other side move. Pulleys can also be connected together. Using more than one pulley can make it easier to lift a heavy load.

WHAT CAN PULLEYS DO

Three practical ways this concept changes movement, force or direction.

A.

Change the Direction of a Pull

A pulley can let you pull down to lift something up.

B.

Make Lifting Easier
